STATISTICAL ANALYSIS - LONG TERM WEATHER PREDICTION - WINTER 2013/2014

The findings of this year's analysis can be summarized as follows:

Winter 2013-2014, under the main scenario, is expected colder than average climatic values by 0,6 degree Celsius. Compared to winter 2013-2014 will be cooler by 1,6 degrees Celsius.
December, February and March are expected to be colder than the average climatic values while January is expected to be warmer than the average climatic values.

Statistical analysis is a method of estimating weather for long periods. The model is based on the analysis of numerical data (temperature at 850hPa) which gives a statistical estimation / probability of weather trend during the estimated period.

Forecast for winter 2013-2014:

General Trend

Winter trend in Greece based on a statistical sample of 34 years is appeared in the following graph:

The previous diagram shows that trend is constantly increased at a rate of 0,013 degrees Celsius / year.
Winter 2012-2013 faced average temperature at 850hPa = 2,97 degrees Celsius.
Winter 2013-2014 with average temperature at 850hPa = 1,32 degrees Celsius, colder than the winter 2012-2013 by 1,65 degrees Celsius and colder by 0,64 degrees Celsius than average climatic values.

December 2013

- December 2013 is expected colder than average climatic values by 1,2 degrees Celsius with average temperature at 850hPa = 1,7 degrees Celsius.
December starts with temperatures as normal for season and increased chance of rain. However, gradually and towards the middle of December, temperatures will be decreased and snow is expected on mountainous areas of central and northern Greece - and probably in regions of northern Greece with lower altitude. The week before Christmas temperatures will be significantly increased and good weather conditions are expected. Temperatures will be decreased after Christmas and snow is expected in all mountainous regions as well as in hilly regions of northern Greece.

January 2014

 - January 2014 is expected warmer than average climatic values by 0,4 degrees Celsius with average temperature at 850hPa = 1,6 degrees Celsius.
January starts with lower temperatures (as normal for season) and snow is expected in all mountainous and hilly regions, as well as lowland areas of eastern and northern Greece. However, following the first days of January, temperature will be significantly increased reaching high levels for season / prevalence of south winds. These weather conditions are going to last till the middle of January after which temperatures will be decreased and several showers are expected. This period will be followed by a weather change (around the 20th of January) with heavy snow on mountainous and hilly regions of central Greece. This change will be relatively short followed by a warmer period with temperatures higher than normal.

February 2014

- February 2014 is expected colder than climatic values by 0,9 degrees Celsius with average temperature at 850hPa = -0,25 degrees Celsius.
February starts with higher temperatures (as normal for season) and  several rain showers. This warm period will be relatively short, followed by a cold period with snow on all mountainous regions, and probably in regions of northern Greece with lower altitude. However, gradually and till the middle of February, temperatures will be increased and several rain showers are expected in southern and western regions / prevalence of southwest winds. This period will be followed by a serious weather change - probably the coldest days of the winter - with snow even in lowland areas of eastern and southern Greece. End of February, temperatures will be increased again.

March 2014

 - March 2014 is expected colder than the climatic values by 0,9 degrees Celsius and with averaged temperature at 850hPa = 2,2 degrees Celsius.
March starts with higher temperatures (as normal for season) and good weather conditions. However soon, temperatures will be decreased and snow is expected even in lowland areas of central and northern Greece. Good weather is expected in the middle of March with a short period of cold weather around the 25th of March with snow in mountainous areas. Good weather and temperatures much higher than normal for season at the end of March.

In general winter 2013-2014 is expected:
-Quite cold with lower temperatures than average climatic values - probably the coldest winter of the last 10 years.
-Dry with precipitation lower than average.
-Days of snowfall in hilly and lowland regions of northern Greece more than average .
